Kansas 2007 State Convention Wrap-up

By Denise Cassells Topeka, Ks - KFWDC held their state convention on June 23 - 24, 2007.  This year's theme was "Get on Board for a Democratic Victory."  Eleven counties attended with a total of 64 ladies registered for Saturday's luncheon.  Workshop was conducted by Steve Boyda and Dr. Owen DeLong on ethics and campaigning, which yielded fascinating discussions related to our governments ethics on foreign relations, war issues, and how our current and past administrations have functioned behind the scenes in regards to CIA operations and various other activities that are not introduced by our regular media.  Steve Boyda is husband of US Congresswomen Nancy Boyda.  Dr. DeLong is a graduate of Harvard Unniversity with a PhD. in Political Science, he is also campaign advisor to Nancy Boyda.

Saturday evenings reception was attended by Kansas Governor Kathlene Sebelius to honor our new NFDW President Helen Knetzer, as well as eight women from Kansas who have been honored in the past as the recipients of the NFDW "Humanitarian of the Year Award". Saturday evenings banquet guest speaker was KS 2nd District Congresswoman Nancy Boyda.  Boyda discussed legislative bills that she has introduced as a freshman house member that have passed overwhelmingly in the US House and Senate.

Entertainment was provided by Diane Taylor, who had everyone in attendance singing along to songs she has written, while she played her guitar and told jokes.  Special entertainment for the evening was Ruby Smith who very eloquently gave a "Characterization of Sojourner Truth," complete with era clothing which she wore to emphasize the reality of her re-enactment of our past. Both a live and silent auction were conducted at the close of the banquet.

New officers were elected and installed on Sunday a.m.

Officers include: President Ardena Matlack, Vice President Linda Peterson, Secretary Diane Taylor, Treasurer Naomi Childress, and Paliamentarian Marge Zokoura-Vaughan. Outgoing president Fran Lee will be very missed. Newly elected president Ardena Matlack was a KS State Legislater for ten years, so Kansas will continue it's tradition of excellence.
