NFDW: Standing on the POWER of ServiceRep. Nancy Pelosi, First and Only Female Speaker of the House,Announces Her Retirement in 2026
The National Federation of Democratic Women (NFDW) is proud to herald that longtime NFDW member, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA-11), will retire in 2026. Pelosi’s retirement from the U.S. Congress will clear the way for new 11 th Congressional District representation, which includes most of San Francisco, California. From her historic win in 1987, Rep. Pelosi has been a political powerhouse. She was the first woman elected U.S. House Speaker and the first woman to lead a major political party in either Chamber of Congress.
During her current 38 th year of congressional service, Rep. Pelosi also maintained her longtime commitment to the objectives of NFDW: unite women of the Democratic Party, promote the cause of the Democratic Party and encourage full participation of women in every level of the Democratic Party structure. With a staunch belief in women’s political power, Rep. Pelosi and NFDW recently combined forces to co-sponsor a Prop 50 Women Calling Women Phonebank that played a pivotal role in the successful passage of California’s redistricting plan. At 85 years young, Rep. Pelosi was also credited for her role in the recent Democratic Party’s sweep in November 4 th elections across the country.
Throughout her years of service, Rep. Pelosi also ignited a commitment to public service in her daughter. NFDW First Vice-President Christine Pelosi stated, “I have followed in my mother’s footsteps, to not only join the NFDW, but to actively support and fight for measures that positively affect women, children and democracy.”
Rep. Pelosi has clearly shown us that the power of service is the catalyst to change a nation even during times of turmoil. As we continue our path forward, the NFDW will embrace Rep. Pelosi’s message to “know your power” and to know that “we have always led the way.”
